Foundling Takes Flight
Mixed Media 2016
My love affair with small scrappy things began when I was 4 years old. I started collecting bread crumbs from the dinner table. I widened my search to baseboards, hallways and behind bedroom doors where I rescued tattered threads, bits of wire, rubber bands, dust bunnies, etc. It became a full time job. I outfitted a shoe box with long rows of ready made beds from toilet paper, a pillow and blanket were included. I took special care in admitting each foundling without words. Just my eyes spoke. “You are sad and all by yourself bread crumb, but now you have friends and a bed.”
Looking back, parental abandonment and neglect lead to my life long fascination with small found objects. For the past decade, I have sought out found junk and broken relics to rework into assemblage pieces. The act of creating is a powerful way to bridge a safe connection for my body to metabolize unbearable pain & trauma.
This flying foundling is made from a very old rivet tool, a 1940’s doll head, Ken pajamas, a kitchen utensil and embroidery hoop and embodies my many flying dreams.
